Recent article in the Insurance Journal points out that dog bites cost US Insurers $1.6 Billion in 2024. Average cost per claim rose 18% from $58,545 to $69,272 in 2024. In Wisconsin, (Wis. Stat. § 174.02) dog owners have “strict” liability for any injury caused by their dog. That means, it doesn’t matter how it happened or how it was provoked. YOU are liable. On top of that, if there is any history of prior incident, significant enough to break the skin or cause disfigurement, then the damages are automatically DOUBLED. So that is why a dog that has caused any injury is no longer insurable So, please be careful not to put your dog in a situation where this could happen.
